During the warm summer months, kiddie pools are a refuge for children looking to cool off. Kiddie pools that are frequently used should be properly cared for to protect not only the condition of the pool but also the health of those who swim in it. Care for a kiddie pool by sanitizing it.

Before Sanitizing a kiddie poolsTo maintain the quality of a kiddie pool, it is important to skim the pool daily to remove any debris, such as leaves, dirt, grass and bugs. If the kiddie pool is small (less than 50 gallons), replace the water daily, scrub the pool with bleach, rinse with water and refill the pool to the desired level. This prevents the growth of bacteria and pool slime. For larger pools, it is not necessary to drain and refill daily, as it is a waste of water. Larger pools should be sanitized regularly, depending on how frequently the pool is used.

Sanitizing a Kiddie Pool is essential if you want to prevent the growth of pool slime, algae and bacteria. If left alone, a pool will harbor potentially dangerous microorganisms. If a child swims in the contaminated pool, she can come in contact with these microorganisms and become sick. Slime growth in the pool is also dangerous because it is slippery and may cause pool users to fall.

Several effective methods of sanitizing a Kiddie Pool are available. Shocking the pool with chemicals will help keep the pool clear. A clear pool has little to no algae or bacterial growth. Another method of sanitizing a kiddie pool involves chemicals, such as chlorine. Chlorine comes in tablets, blocks and powder form. The proper measurement of chlorine to add to the pool depends on the amount of water in the pool. Chlorine prevents the growth of bacteria and slime in a Kiddie Pool. To ensure the chemical isn't too strong, use pH indicators. The pool's pH should be between 7.4 and 7.6, according to the North Carolina Division of Environmental Health, to prevent bacterial growth.

When a kiddie pool is not in use, place a cover over it to prevent debris from accumulating in the water. Check the pH of the pool daily and adjust chlorine measurements as needed to keep the water bacteria-free.
