A kayak is a boat in which the operator faces forward in a sitting or kneeling position and uses one double-bladed paddle. You can get kayaks specifically made for almost any condition. Taking a kayak out for the first time can be exhilarating or intimidating. There is almost no space between you and the water, and even without waves balance is key.
