How to inflate boat properly

Some water sports might be considered a little dangerous for younger children, but going out on the inflatable boat can be enjoyed by all. For the most part inflating the boat is a simple process, but you must be careful to do it correctly. Improper inflating can lead to problems with the boat.

Before you purchase an inflatable boat, do your research. Many problems like rips, leaks and bursting can be attributed to over- or underinflating the kayak. Inflation done correctly can be the difference between money well spent and having to purchase a new boat due to a shortened tube life. The right pump and a little knowledge can make all the difference. Remember when inflating: if the pressure is too low and you underinflate, the boat will not sit right on the water; if the pressure is too high you may cause damage to the boat floor.

Proper care of your inflatable boat can add years to its raft life. Follow a few strict steps for storage (hot and cold), inflation and transporting your boat to ensure long product life. Many people make the mistake of worrying about underinflating the tube, thereby losing air on the water, causing it to sink. Consequently they pump the boat too much. But rest assured that good quality kayaks will not suddenly lose air when inflated properly because of the high-tech materials and various inflation chambers on newer model kayaks. It is probably not a great idea, with all of the options now available, to purchase inflatable kayaks that are made of unreinforced vinyl, because these will be more likely to rip.

There are right and wrong ways to store the boat. The best ways to keep these kayaks puncture free after inflation and working properly for a long time is to store them correctly. A tip: Do not leave the fully inflated boat sitting in the sun for any length of time. If you plan on sitting for a picnic or lounging in the sun, the tube will expand if left in the heat and could cause your kayak damage. So either store it in a cool spot or deflate it some. Conversely, cold water or cold air may cause the tube to deflate slightly, so you may need to adjust for temperature.
